June 15th - 19th
DISCOVERING THE PEACE HERO IN YOU!
Monday - Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Friday 10:00 a.m. - 12: noon
The Dayton International Peace Museum's (DIPM) Peace Camp is in its 7th year. Each year the theme and focus is on peacebuilding skills that our young children can apply and practice in every component of camp including the lesson, i.e. focus of the day, crafts, storytelling, snacks and cooperative games and activities. This year's theme is 'Peace Heroes: Discovering the Peace Hero in You!' The age range for the 2015 Peace Camp is 4 yrs. through 6th grade. Our class size is limited to 15, with 2 lead teachers, and 2 high school/college student mentors per classroom and 2 mentors per age group. Each lead teacher and mentor has experience in the DIPM peace camp and what it means to practice peace. Our young peacebuilders will have the opportunity to discover the peace hero within themselves as each child will be defining what a peace hero means to them, and what characteristics 'Peace Heroes' have that help them practice peace in their daily lives.
We will be considering these three things when defining a Peace Hero:
A Peace Hero is someone who shows respect.
A Peace Hero is someone who practices being fair.
A Peace Hero is someone who creates peace for one and all.
The DIPM Peace Camp provides a safe place for children to come together and imagine a world where peace is possible. We teach peacebuilding skills which emphasize compassionate listening, being kind, use of language and activities that provide opportunities to practice peace every day with the understanding that we are not perfect; even Peace Heroes make mistakes. The lesson is what we learn from our mistakes and what we do with it that makes the difference!
We will be focusing on being a Peace Hero for ourselves, our families, our neighborhoods, communities, our earth, and for our world. On our last day of camp, we invite parents, grandparents and guardians for a celebration of song and art that demonstrate what we have learned at this year's DIPM Peace Camp: 'Discovering the Peace Hero in You'. They will experience a taste of Peace Heroes Camp and what the week was like for their children.
