Hayo-Went-Ha Camps

Frontiersmen Camp - Boys completing 5th grade - FOUR weeks!

Camp Description
FRONTIERSMEN PROGRAM

The Frontiersmen Program will enjoy Polar Bear Swim, ride the zip line, challenge themselves with our six climbing routes on the climbing wall, create great arts and crafts projects, learn how to sail and canoe, enjoy a game of ultimate frisbee or soccer and make a LOT of new friends! Our staff focus on fun, safety, and creating a solid cabin group in the cabin.

As Frontiersmen also dive deeper into the YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha wilderness adventure trips. Campers spend three days at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with their 2-week counterparts the Pathfinders, hiking up steep dunes to catch stunning views and playing on the shores of Lake Michigan. Your child will expand his knowledge of backcountry living while spending two nights sleeping in a tent, helping staff cook meals over a camp stove, and bonding with his cabin mates. They will then take a ferry to South Manitou Island and spend 3 days on the island exploring the lighthouse, and visiting migratory bird nesting grounds all while living in a tent and exploring the Lake Michigan Island. The Frontiersmen campers get to enjoy all that camp has to offer.

If you are interested in a 2 week program for your camper finishing the 5th grade please register for the Pathfinders Program.

TRIP LOCATION

The Sleeping Bear Dunes are located west of camp on the shores of Lake Michigan. For more information about the location of this trip, check out the Sleeping Bear Dunes website. The first part of the trip will be in the mainland part of the park camping with the two-week Pathfinders. They will then take a ferry from Leland to South Manitou Island which is still part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. They will spend time at primitive campsites, cooking their own food and exploring all that there is to offer on the Island.

YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha

YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is an all boys YMCA overnight camp that offers a dynamic combination of wilderness experiences and traditional in-camp activities. Located on 600 acres on the shores of beautiful Torch Lake in Northern Michigan, YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha has 119 years of tradition and experience to provide incredible adventures campers remember for a lifetime.

Campers learn to work together, to support each other and to respect what each member of the cabin has to offer. The wonderful variety of camp trips reinforce the value of teamwork. Cabin groups of two cabin leaders and eight campers meet the challenge of extended canoeing and hiking trips to Michigan’s north country, the Canadian wilderness or sailing the incredible lakes of Michigan, all the while learning to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. Trained and experienced staff lead our trip programs.

The morning schedule allows campers to work together as a cabin unit. The time is also used to teach campers about the camping equipment, trip location and safety before their trips. The afternoon allows each camper to individually select any one of the following activities: sailing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, archery, nature studies, soccer, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball, tennis, basketball, and newspaper.

Our camp motto, Each for All...All for Each is evident in all we do. The cabin group is the essence of the camping experience. We emphasize and follow the seven core values of our YMCA of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Inclusion, Teamwork, Environmental Stewardship and Responsibility in all that we do.
