Hayo-Went-Ha Camps

Kayakers Camp - Girls completing 8th & 9th grades - FOUR weeks!

Camp Description
KAYAKERS PROGRAM

As Kayakers, campers spend fourteen days exploring beautiful Lake Superior Provincial Park on the eastern shore of Lake Superior by kayak. The first week of camp will include practice paddling on Lake Arbutus and instruction on packing and loading the boats. The adventure begins in Wawa, Ontario where the group will meet their kayak guides. These guides work through local outfitter Naturally Superior Adventures, the same company camp has worked with for over 15 years.

Before venturing out onto Lake Superior, the kayak guides train campers on water safety and paddling techniques in the warmer waters of the Michipicoten River. The next day, the group will set off in their boats at Agawa Bay near the southern end of Lake Superior Provincial Park. The group will paddle north through remote sections of the park, exploring waterfalls, islands, and beautiful rocky shorelines along the way, before they finish the trip at Naturally Superior Adventures’ paddling center in Michipicoten Bay. While in camp, the girls will get to participate in all of the fun on-site challenges and activities offered.

Our certified sea kayak guides teach campers advanced safety skills before they start their twelve-day trip, and the guides carry the specialized equipment and technology necessary for safe nautical travel.

TRIP LOCATION

The trip begins and ends at the Naturally Superior Adventures’ home base near Wawa, Ontario. The group paddles along the shoreline of Lake Superior Park from south to north, passing through beautiful northern hardwood forests and crisp, clear waters. For more information about the location of the trip, check out the Lake Superior Provincial Park website.

Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha

YMCA Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is an all girls YMCA overnight camp that offers a dynamic combination of wilderness experiences and traditional in-camp activities. Located on 120 acres on the shores of beautiful Arbutus Lake, YMCA Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha has 109 years of tradition and experience to provide incredible adventures campers remember for a lifetime.

Campers learn to work together, to support each other and to respect what each member of the cabin has to offer. The wonderful variety of camp trips reinforce the value of teamwork. Cabin groups of two cabin leaders and eight campers meet the challenge of extended canoeing and hiking trips to Michigan’s north country, the Canadian wilderness or biking along trails across the Upper Peninsula, all the while learning to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. Trained and experienced staff lead our trip programs.

The morning schedule allows campers to work together as a cabin unit. The time is also used to teach campers about the camping equipment, trip location and safety before their trips. The afternoon allows each camper to individually select any one of the following activities: sailing, swimming, canoeing, paddleboarding, kayaking, arts and crafts, archery, nature studies, soccer, pickleball, gaga, tennis, basketball, and newspaper.

Our camp motto, Each for All...All for Each is evident in all we do. The cabin group is the essence of the camping experience. We emphasize and follow the seven core values of our YMCA of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Inclusion, Teamwork, Environmental Stewardship and Responsibility in all that we do.
